FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How wide should a concrete walkway be?

For a standard front entry walkway we recommend a minimum of 36–48 inches wide to comfortably accommodate two people walking side by side. Backyard paths and side yard walkways can be 24–36 inches wide. For commercial properties or ADA-compliant walkways, a minimum of 60 inches is required. We'll recommend the right width based on your specific property layout.

How thick should a concrete sidewalk be in Houston?

Standard residential concrete sidewalks and walkways in Houston are typically poured at 4 inches thick with rebar reinforcement. Houston's expansive clay soil requires proper base preparation and thickness to prevent cracking and settling over time. For heavier use areas we may recommend 5 inches depending on the application.

Do I need a permit for a concrete walkway in Houston?

Most residential concrete walkways in Houston do not require a permit. However, if your walkway connects to a public sidewalk or crosses a city right-of-way, a permit may be required by the City of Houston. We recommend checking with your local municipality before starting. ESP Construction will advise you during your free estimate if a permit is needed for your specific project.

How long does a concrete walkway installation take?

Most residential concrete walkway installations in Houston are completed in 1 day. After the pour, the walkway needs 24–48 hours before foot traffic and reaches full strength within 28 days. We'll give you a clear timeline during your free on-site estimate based on the size and scope of your project.
